Psychoanalytic criticism has read as a kind of Freudian "family romance" Stephen`s desertion of his family in Ulysses-the "family romance" as appearing in a pre-oedipal stage in which the child suspects the authenticity of his parents. His nonchalant manner in the family relations and his encounter with Bloom are, in the psychoanalytical view, seen as the new formation of family on his own. In particular, a lot of friction between him and his mother Mary has been due to the absence of a paternal model he should identify with and the role of the mother as a paternal substitute in the oedipal stage. It is Joyce who provides a clue to the understanding of the mother-son dispute in Ulysses. His Hamlet lectures given to his students in Trieste feature Polonius`s overprotective fatherhood and Ophelia`s helplessness. In Ulysses, Joyce as Stephen also divulges the marital conflict between King Hamlet thinly disguised as Shakespeare and Gertrude as Ann Hathaway. In short, Joyce`s Hamlet lectures focus on the way in which family members are emotionally interconnected. Unlike the Freudian and Lacanian interpretations of Hamlet, which mainly look into the fantasy of Hamlet as a neurotic or a psychotic and examine the oscillation between his biological father as an object to spurn and his stepfather as an object to identify with, Joycean Hamlet takes into account Hamlet as torn in the marital conflict between Shakespeare and Gertrude. Such a family-systemic view as Joycean Hamlet exegesis offers an interpsychical picture of Stephen`s persistent antipathy against his demanding mother, which is very different from an intrapsychial one like the psychoanalytical view. No matter how moderate the emotional divorce between Simon and Mary is, it plays a significant role in developing the familial transactional patterns of father`s peripheral function in the family matter, mother`s overprotective motherhood, and child`s claim for his independence from the overly demanding mother.
