The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how to read Joyce`s Finnegans Wake and how to translate it into Korean. The following three passages, in particular, have been chosen from the text for this purpose: 1) The first passage(FW 336.21-32)shows that the scene of Buckley`s shooting the Russian General, a tale from the Cremean War humorously rendered by Butt and Taff and generally referred to as BUCKLEY AND RUSSIAN GENERAL. 2) The second passage(FW 387-388.9) is from the last chapter of Book Ⅱ, one of the shortest chapters in the text, in which Joyce writes the Tristan and Isolde story. 3) The third passage(FW 418.9-419.8) is Shaun`s response to the eighth question in which Joyce includes the fable of the ONDT AND THE GRACEHOPPER, a story of the practical-minded Ondot(Shaun) and the prodigal Gracehoper(Shem). This fable is also Joyce`s defense of Finnegans Wake against his critics, in particular, Wyndham Lewis. This demonstration shows how to analyze the Wakean vocabulary and the attempt to recreate the polyglot puns and portmanteau words of the text, which leads the translator to mix the more poetic Chinese characters with the much more prosaic Korean Haguel. The thesis develops in order of text, exegesis, explication and translation respectively.
