Ulysses, which uses the different narrative techniques and boasts the wide range of literary styles in order to subsume the various discourses of Joyce`s Era, rejects to fix the meaning of the text as single one. These characteristics of the narrative of Ulysses correspond to those of water, which are described in detail in "Ithaca". For example, Water has "universality," "democratic equality and constancy," "profundity," "variability," "violence," "simplicity," "metamorphoses" and "ubiquity" (U 17. 185-26). Ironically, "catechism" which is the main narrative method of "Ithaca" and conflicts with those various traits of water, because catechism tries to fix meaning of the text within the frame of questions and answers. Meanwhile, contrary to "Ithaca", "Penelope" shows the flowing narrative similar to fluidity of water, which allows Molly to express her inner thoughts without any disturbance from the patriarchal ideologue. Also "Sirens" which adapts musical pattern as its narrative method reveals the opposite characteristics to those of "Ithaca," for the former shows the hidden connection of meanings by means of "overture" of music, instead of emphasizing clear understanding of the text through the established logics of language on which catechism is based. In conclusion, the various images and different traits of water are essential for questioning the problematic narrative styles such as catechism. Moreover, they are also vital for understanding the narrative strategy of Ulysses which brings the dominant conservative discourses such as Catholic dogma, imperialism, and patriarchal ideologue to dismantle them through the narrative methods which resemble the images of water.
